Abstract

Based on the trajectory of Júlia Martins and Otília Amorim, I analyze how the mulata (mulatto woman) character created a space for mestizo actresses in musical theater in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the 20th century. This process was marked by difficulties with questions of gender, race and class, but offered a solution for the representation of mestiço identity for the city and the country.
