The negotiations required to gain access to the field can provide particularly rich material. First of all, the detailed analysis of a refusal from the field, which occurred in the medical world during sociological research on anorexia, contributes to the study of situations in which the survey-taker is not in a dominant position. It also offers the basis for a sociology of the importance of sociology in discourse on mental illness, and for the practical relationship between sociology and psychology.
