Abstract

The study of carrying capacity of plantation forests for captive breeding of deer was conduct at the Baturaden plantation forest, Central Java on July 2005 to November 2006. The observation was done on habitat aspects such as feed (qualities and quantities), cover, space and water availabilities. Feed availability of the area depended on its underground species stocks, while cover function depended on its trees density. Underground species stocks were analysed systematically by using vegetation analysis on 20 units of square plot models of 1 m x 1 m. The distances among plots were 10 m. A cover function was measured based on height, diameter and total trees. The results showed that 12 species of grass and shurbs were found as deer feed with their productivity such as Costus speciasus Smith (30.50 kg/ha/day), Calliandra callothyrsus Benth (20.90 kg/ha/day), and Axonopus compresus L (20.90 kg/ha/day). Based on productivity measurement of feed, it was indicated that block of 6d Baturraden forest can be available of feed 95.50 kg/ha/day. Carrying capacity of habitat in block 6d was 56 individuals (Cervus timorensis russa Mul.& Schl 1844) and in an area of 6 ha or 111 individuals (Axis axis Erxleben 1777).
