Abstract
The experiment on the effects of shelter-hedge, alternatly planted Miscanthus sinensis Anderss var, condensatus Makino and Pennisetum purpureum Schumach, for two sides (N∼S, E∼W) of uplandrice field, against typhoon was carried out at summer in 1956. The results obtained are as follow ; (1) In this summer, typhoons were recorded 3 times. Among them Typhoon No. 12 had greatest average wind velocity ; otherwise the uplandrice plant had been growing up heading date, so that its damage was severest. (2) As to comparison with injuries of 2 grasses composed of shelter-hedge, Misscanthus sinensis Anderss var, condensatus Makino was very slightly than the others by typhoon ; and continued its growth actively after Typhoon No. 12 passing through. And at the harvesting date (7 th. Nov), the yields of green leaves and stems were superior. (3) At the Tyhoon No. 12, the hedge whose height was 180cm and screening ratio was 80%, below about a meter height and the upper parts shown almost 90 to 100%. (4) The decrease of wind velocity reached at 16 to 17 times the hedge height, although half velocity zone reached at 7∼8 times the height of one (see Fig. 1 & Table. 1). (5) According to the result of investigation about the yield on paddy grain per uplandrice individial, all area (99%) in this field was superior than the none shelter-hedge field one(half yield of none damaged plot, in this view point see Fig. 2 & Table 2). (6) As described above, this shelter-hedge was very effective against typhoon. And now we shall have to diffuse for practical use in south Kyushu fields. © 1957, The Society of Agricultural Meteorology of Japan. All rights reserved.
