Abstract

Surabaya as the second-largest metropolitan area in Indonesia has a long history of facing various natural disasters. However, young children in early childhood often lack the knowledge and understanding to effectively respond to these disasters, making them particularly vulnerable. To address this issue, a design approach was adopted to create interactive and engaging materials focused on disaster awareness specifically customized for early childhood. These materials, in the form of interactive books, utilize child-friendly language, illustrations, and activities to educate children about different types of disasters, their potential risks, and appropriate safety measures. This research employs a qualitative method. Data collection techniques include literature review, interviews, surveys, observations, and documentation methods, which are subsequently analyzed using a descriptive method with qualitative analysis. The Fishbone diagram is used for data presentation. Furthermore, the design is conducted with a design thinking approach. The design process involved collaboration between researchers, teachers, and the Surabaya City Disaster Management Agency (BPBD Surabaya) to ensure the materials were relevant, culturally appropriate, and aligned with local disaster preparedness guidelines. The interactive books were piloted in several early childhood education centers in Surabaya, and their impact on children's disaster awareness was evaluated through pre- and post-assessment surveys. The findings of this study demonstrate a significant improvement in children's knowledge and understanding of disasters, as well as their ability to identify and respond to potential risks. Through these interactive books, young children are provided with knowledge and skills that can foster a sense of ownership and resilience in facing future disasters. The findings of this research offer valuable insights for teachers, policymakers, and practitioners seeking effective strategies to enhance disaster awareness among young children in their communities.
