Abstract

A sense of belonging relating to faculty retention is particularly important in emerging and interdisciplinary fields such as sport management, where academic legitimacy is still evolving. The data revealed three central themes: experiences of marginalization; a perceived lack of respect or recognition for sport management research, which contributed to insecurity around the tenure and promotion process; and growing concerns about mental health, including symptoms of depression. These themes highlight the strong connection between a sense of belonging and faculty retention. The findings offer valuable insights for developing institutional policies that prioritize faculty well-being and promote retention in sport management academia.
