Abstract

We describe a proposed 2(nd) generation instrument (KMOS) for the ESO VLT which will deliver a unique multiple deployable integral field capability in the near-infrared (1-2.5mum). The science drivers for such an instrument are presented and linked to the functional specification. The overall instrument concept is discussed in the context of two proposed solutions for delivering a deployable integral field capability. Detailed discussions of these two approaches, and ongoing prototype studies, are described in separate papers.
