Abstract
Dam break is usually a catastrophic event. Great- er safety can be provided in the downstream valley by adopting integrated risk and emergency management. The preparation of emergency plans requires some information, such as flood maps showing water depths over the valley and the discharge peak times in each affected area. This work evaluates and validates the use of a quasi-2D math- ematical model, MODCEL, developed at the Federal Uni- versity of Rio de Janeiro, and its ability to simulate the dam break wave, offering the scientific community another val- uable tool for the study of dam safety. The model was used to simulate an experiment in a laboratory channel and also the hypothetical dam break of Funil dam on Paraíba do Sul River, State of Rio de Janeiro. The results obtained were compared with results measured in the laboratory and also with simulations previously performed with other computa- tional tools. Considering the tests conducted, it was found that MODCEL is a tool that can properly simulate the dam break phenomena, considering its capacity of dynamically simulating the river flood plains and not requiring hard computational resources.
