Abstract
This study aims to determine how women with curly hair interpret their hair and to reveal the experience of interpersonal communication and self-concept of women with curly hair. The paradigm used in the research is an interpretive paradigm with a qualitative approach and a tradition of phenomenological studies. The research subjects consisted of five women with curly hair who were selected purposively. Then data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation study. The results of the study revealed that initially women with curly hair had a negative concept of curly hair, both visually and perceived. However, as experience and self-concept develop, women with curly hair now interpret their hair positively as a blessing, a unique physical identity and like a crown that can inspire others. The communication experience of women with curly hair includes a pleasant communication experience with acceptance, friendship and motivation. As well as unpleasant communication experiences in the form of verbal and non-verbal harassment and discriminatory treatment. This experience is received from interactions with family, educational environment, work environment, general public and the opposite sex. The various experiences of communication, interaction and knowledge are interpreted retrospectively to form a curly-haired woman's self-concept, which initially was negative physically, psychologically and socially to positive physically, psychologically and socially.
