Abstract

New, ductile, and cobalt-free magnet alloys based on the Fe-Mo-Ni system have been developed for potential substitution of some Co-Fe base magnet alloys. The new alloys are very ductile and can be processed into thin tape or fine wire. An Fe-20 Mo-5Ni (wt. %) alloy can be processed to exhibit magnetic properties of Br∼10500 G, Hc∼210 Oe, and (BH)max∼1.1 MGOe which are comparable to those of Vicalloy I (52Co-38Fe-10V). An Fe-7Mo-5Ni alloy exhibits high-remanence, square-loop, anisotropic magnet properties of Br∼19200 G, Hc∼30 Oe, and Br/Bs ∼0.97 which are superior to those of Type 27 Remendur (49Co-48Fe-3V) or Nibcolloy (85Co-12Fe-3V). The new Fe-Mo-Ni alloys consist of abundant elements and could substitute for some of the Co-Fe base magnet alloys which contain large amounts of expensive and strategic cobalt.
