Abstract

This paper discusses the Materials Processing in Space program from two aspects - the technical descriptions and expectations of the first generation space processing payloads for Space Shuttle/Spacelab missions in the mid-1980's, and the planning actions underway for second generation payloads to be flown on the Space Shuttle/Spacelab and aboard automated carrier systems in the late 1980's. The earlier payload systems were directed at the science issues of materials processing in microgravity and the development of processing apparatus. The payload systems, and their host vehicles, to follow promise advanced development and commercial applications.
