Abstract
Small Neogene basins within the Dinarides were never invaded bymarine transgressions during their evolution. The fresh-water sedimentation, endemic fauna and their position between the Adriaticregion and the Pannonian Basin System explain why these basinshave not been considered as parts of the Mediterranean or CentralParatethys realm. The correlation of sediments and fauna of thesefresh-water basins with the Pannonian Basin System and Adriaticregion suggests that Dinaridic fresh-water basins may be consideredas a part of the Central Paratethys. This consideration locates thesouthwestern boundary of Central Paratethys within the High KarstBelt.
