The current status review of Yi ethnic dance creation in contemporary China

Abstract

Yi ethnic dance, an important form of intangible cultural heritage in China, reflects deep cultural roots and communal identity among the Yi people. The objective of this study is to investigate the current status of Yi ethnic dance in contemporary China, with a focus on how traditional practices are preserved, adapted, and taught across various settings. Field work was conducted in Yunnan Province, including Yi villages, universities, and professional performance venues. The study involved 21 informants categorized into key, casual, and general groups, such as choreographers, educators, students, and community participants. A qualitative ethnographic method involving semistructured interviews, participant observation, document analysis, and multimedia documentation was employed. Thematic analysis revealed six major findings: cultural continuity in local communities, active community engagement, structured academic training, integration into theatrical productions, technological enhancement in stage design, and evolving pedagogical models. A key outcome is the recognition of a “dual literacy” approach, emphasizing both technical skill and cultural understanding in dance education. The study highlights the challenges of balancing authenticity with innovation and suggests future research on cross-regional comparisons and digital preservation tools. This research contributes to a broader understanding of how ethnic dance can adapt while sustaining its cultural essence.
