Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction: The coronavirus, the cause of the COVID-19 disease, continues to pose unknowns, many of them related to its symptoms and their durability according to the clinical characteristics of each patient. Objective: To characterize the symptoms that persist after the acute period of COVID-19 at the General Hospital of Luque. Methodology: Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study by which referred symptoms were recorded in the post-acute period (14 days) of individuals who were subjected to investigation to evaluate infection by SARS-CoV-2. A comparative analysis was performed between those with a confirmed diagnosis and those with negative results. Results: 145 individuals, average age of 40.4 ± 10.6 years, were included (105 with confirmed COVID-19), between the months of October and December 2020. The interval between the onset of symptoms and the date of the interview was 44.8 days on average (range 15-186 days), 92% had symptoms at 21 days or more, 85.9% at 30 days or more and 23% at 60 days or more. The severity of the acute infection and the multiorgan affection score were shown as variables associated with the persistence of symptom. Conclusion: Although the term of prolonged COVID-19 (Long COVID) still needs conceptual adjustments, we see that, characterized in this sample, a significant frequency presents symptoms beyond the acute period.
