Abstract

This paper compares the integration process of women's practise in "male" sports to put in obviousness the role of sports in the production and the questioning of gender categories. One can consider federal policies and modes of functioning of feminine committees as a particularly relevant indicator to study the social construction of genders in the "sports world". The choice of football and boxing justifies itself by the "typically male" motivities, sociabilities and symbolic systems of these sports, and by the resistances which they set against the entrance of women. Comparative perspective allows to identify various forms of masculine domination. These differences are connected to the posi- tion of the practise in the French sports field in a particular conjuncture and in the social characteris- tics of the members of the feminine committees.
