Abstract

Background: It is regarded as the main reason for maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The present study aimed at evaluating risk factors for APH. Materials & Methods: This study was conducted on 132 cases of antepartum hemorrhage. Socio- demographic profile and risk factors of APH was recorded. Results: Age group <30 comprised of 3 patients, 30-34 years had 27, 35-39 years had 40 and 40-45 years had 62 patients. 76 patients had education upto primary level, 41 upto intermediate and 15 upto secondary and above. 78 were housewife and 54 were professional, 92 were from rural and 40 from urban area, 82 had monthly income less than 10,000 and 50 had above 10,000. Out of 2138 deliveries, the number of APH was 132 (6.17%). The cause of APH was placenta previa in 40, abruptio placentae in 82 and others in 10 cases. 87 patients had habit of smoking, Family history of diabetes was seen in 14, hypertension in 20 and G6PD deficiency in 5 cases, 15 had history of previous abortion and antenatal care was given in 109 cases, neonatal birth weight <2500 grams was present in 68, 2500-4000 grams in 40 and >4000 grams in 32 babies, time between 2 pregnancies was just 1 year in 72, 2 years in 42 and 3 years and above in 18 patients. APGAR score at 1 minute >7 was seen in 34 and APGAR score at 7 minute >7 was seen in 40 patients. Conclusion: Authors found that common risk factors for APH were low education level, living area, low income, smoking, family history of diabetes, hypertension and APGAR score >7.
