Abstract
Indonesia contains a diverse range of cultures and plants. For a long t ime, Jamu, which is a tradi tional Indonesian medicine, had been used for beauty and human health in Indonesia. In this study, Indonesian medicinal plants used for skin care were examined, and the relevant information was update to incorporate ant i-acne therapies. The anti-acne mechanisms included antibacterial activi ty against Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Staphylococcus aureus, bacterial l ipase inhibition, antioxidant , and ant i-inflammatory activi t ies. Most of the Indonesian medi cinal plants used in skin care showed ant i-acne activi ty that uti l ized et least 2 of these mechanisms. The compounds isolated f rom the Indonesian t raditional medicinal plants related to the anti-acne activi t ies are also discussed. In conclusion, more research on Indonesian medicinal plants is needed.
