Abstract

Mental fatigue is a hot issue in sports research. But there is no integrated measure for mental fatigue of athletes. This paper aims to establish an evaluation criterion that accurately measure the mental fatigue of athletes. First the relevant theories were introduced to identify the relationship between different fatigues and the features of mental fatigue of athletes. Then, the mental fatigue situation of athletes was evaluated through questionnaire survey, field observation and interview. After that, the authors examined the relative importance of various indices of mental fatigue in explaining training satisfactory of athletes, revealing that mental fatigue can effectively explain the total variance of training satisfaction. On this basis, a calculation formula was established for mental fatigue of athletes, involving satisfaction, motivation and self-esteem. Next, the proposed evaluation criteria for mental fatigue was verified through application on athletes with different degrees of mental fatigue after uninterrupted training. The results show that the proposed criteria, which are based on satisfaction, motivation and self-esteem, can reflect the mental fatigue of athletes well. The research results are helpful for alleviating mental fatigue of athletes.
