Abstract

This paper discusses the chemistry of clays and their use as raw material to produce pottery and advanced ceramic materials, approaching historical, social and economic aspects. In order to describe the process of transforming clay into ceramic a handcraft pottery production was studied. It was identified by X-ray the main minerals presented in the clay and in the ceramic in order to understand the chemical modification that takes place during the process.
