Parastomal hernia repair

Abstract

Hernias that develop at the site of the various intestinal stomas are quite common and often lead to many problems. Parastomal hernias may present as problems of stoma care, difficulty with the fit of the appliances or irrigation, leakage of the fluids produced, a significant cosmetic deformity, or as complications of the hernia, such as intestinal obstruction or strangulation. The presence of a large protrusion may make repair a necessity irrespective of its other side effects because of a significant cosmetic deformity. Herniation is less frequent with ileostomy than colostomy, but the overall incidence of parastomal herniation is difficult to quantify.
