Abstract

A review of advanced water treatment technology and equipment being marketed in the UK. Much of the UK's investment has been in ozone and granulated activated carbon (GAC) processes. The advantages and disadvantages of these processes are outlined. The advanced oxidation process which combines ultraviolet (UV) radiation with chemical oxidation is detailed. New biological processes described include the Denitropur process, and the Biopur biological aerated flooded filter (BAFF) system. Davy International's deep shaft aerobic treatment process for liquid effluent is outlined. Membrane technology, its advantages and disadvantages, and some commercially available systems are described. The use of ultrasonic waves for water treatment is being studied in the USA. Ozone and GAC will continue to be the most popular in the UK, with the widespread use of other advanced technologies unlikely in the short term. (J.M.McLaughlin)
