The Structure, Function, and Genesis of the Prechorus

Abstract

Prechoruses emerged in the mid-1960s as verse-chorus and strophic forms converged upon a four-part formal disposition that Everett (1999) calls “statement, restatement, departure, and conclusion,” or srdc. This study traces the expansion of the srdc scheme from its compact deployment in strophes to expanded iterations that approximate verse-chorus form.
