Abstract
The theory of Hill and Johnson for upwelling over the shelf break is modified to give agreement with the work of Killworth. It is shown that when upwelling occurs over a discontinuity in bottom slope, this upwelling does not penetrate into the surface Ekman layer. Associated with this upwelling is a strong current along the shelf break in the bottom Ekman layer.
