Abstract

GPS receivers are increasingly being used in forests. Not only are they used for mapping points, lines or surfaces but also to navigate to locations whose coordinate points are known. So as to investigate the accuracy of receivers in the navigation mode, tests were carried out in a forest. They show that in this particular case the professional GPS receivers tested are quicker and more accurate than conventional wayfinding tools (topometer and compass). These findings can be extrapolated from as long as consideration is given to a number of parameters such as plot accessibility and forest landform.
