RDA training and implementation: Looks and perspectives

Abstract

Introduction: The RDA announces major changes in the cataloging process and a new way of representing information resources. The training and implementation of RDA in libraries requires great efforts from cataloguers. This article presents part of the results of a master's thesis. Objective: Point out the main training actions for the implementation of the RDA developed by member countries that participated in its development and by libraries in other countries, and identify the main preferences for programs, methods and content topics for training the RDA by UFMG cataloguers. Method: It was used the methodology of exploratory and descriptive objectives and quantitative aspects, the bibliographical research, and also, as an instrument for data collection, the semi-structured interview. Results: They point out that face-to-face training is the preferred method by cataloguers and the preferred content for training are changes in relation to RDA and AACR2. Conclusion: It is noteworthy that training is an important step for the implementation of the RDA and that the identification of training preferences by the institutions is an essential step to define well which training instruments will be used and introduced to the staff of their communities of information.
