Abstract

Examines obstacles to effective teamwork, such as language, customs, and professional culture; dominance of physicians over medical and team decision making; and role competition. Skills, strategies, and attitudes that enhance team functioning are noted. Approaches generic to all roles are presented, including assessing the team as a group, contracting, monitoring the process, dealing with conflict, and understanding interprofessional differences.
