It is remarkable how much information is now available concerning an infectious agent which was unknown until 1973, yet it is obvious that there is a great deal of research to be done and hopefully this may lead to practical improvement in the continuing problem of diarrhoeal disease, both acute and chronic, throughout the world. Clinicians in the developed world who usually have a clinical situation where the specific effects of rotavirus can be assessed uncomplicated by a host of other preexisting and complicating problems, as in the developing world, have an important responsibility to investigate the specific pathogenetic role of rotavirus in diarrhoea.
