Abstract

Dental caries is a major problem of dental and oral health. One of the bacteria that causes dental caries is Streptococcus mutans. Water hyacinth leaves contain flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and terpenoids that can be used as antibacterials. Objective for identifying the antibacterial activity of water hyacinth leaf extract (Eichhornia crassipes) against Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Type of research used True Experimental with a Posttest-only Control Group. Antibacterial activity using well-diffusion method and determination of MIC and MBC using liquid dilution method analyzed non-parametric statistics Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney. Results from this water hyacinth leaves contain secondary metabolites, namely flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids and terpenoids. The antibacterial activity test of water hyacinth leaf extract has an inhibition zone diameter of 15.41 mm. The MIC value at a concentration of 50% and does not have a MBC. Research results show that hyacinth extract is bacteriostatic against Streptococcus mutans bacteria that cause tooth decay.Karies gigi merupakan masalah utama kesehatan gigi dan mulut. Salah satu bakteri penyebab karies gigi adalah Streptococcus mutans. Daun eceng gondok memiliki kandungan senyawa flavonoid, tanin, alkaloid, dan terpenoid yang dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai antibakteri. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu mengidentifikasi aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak daun eceng gondok (Eichhornia crassipes) terhadap bakteri Streptococcus mutans. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah True Experimental dengan Posttest-only Control Group. Aktivitas antibakteri menggunakan metode difusi sumuran dan penentuan Konsentrasi Hambat Minimum dan Konsentrasi Bunuh Minimum menggunakan metode dilusi cair yang dianalisis statistika non parametrik Kruskal-Wallis Test dan Mann Whitney Test. Hasil penelitian daun eceng gondok mengandung metabolit sekunder yaitu flavanoid, tanin, alkaloid dan terpenoid. Uji aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak daun eceng gondok memiliki diameter zona hambat 15,41 mm. Nilai KHM pada konsentrasi 50% dan tidak memiliki KBM. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak eceng gondok bersifat bakteriostatik terhadap bakteri Streptococcus mutans penyebab karies gigi.
