Abstract

Nowadays, many gender issues are discussed in the German mass media, starting from online and in print. Moreover, gender issues are packaged in attractive illustrations. The purpose of this study is to describe how women are depicted in society according to online illustrations entitled "Frauenbild" and "Liebling! Es Tropft!" by Johannes Geisthard on the toonpool.com website. This study used a qualitative method supported by Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis and Peirce's semiotic theory with the object in the form of two German online illustrations on the website toonpool.com. The results showed that the illustrations entitled "Frauenbild" and "Liebling! Es Tropft!" Johannes Geisthard's work on the website toonpool.com depicts women in position as objects. Meanwhile, when viewed from the perspective of the reader, in the illustration entitled "Frauenbild", women tend to be described as the ones who are persecuted, helpless, backward, and far from the same behavior. In contrast to the illustration "Frauenbild", the illustration is entitled "Liebling! Es Tropft!" describes women as owners of household items that tend to burden all household chores as tasks that are identical to women and all taks must be carried out by women. This is a representation of the real social situation in Germany, that there are still many cases of marginalizing women's rights in social life.
