Abstract
One approach towards sustainable use of the restricted resources is the development of technological solutions in order to keep raw materials in the material cycle. When such new technologies are developed, it is not only important to broach the issue of the technological feasibility and design, but especially the question regarding the relevance of the technologies in the future. Three plausible scenarios describing different future developments at the global level and in the field of resource efficiency have been developed in order to assess the future relevance. In the structured process of scenario building, which was based both on external knowledge and on the exchange of knowledge with technology developers, future potentials, opportunities and risks for six recycling technologies were identified.
