Interactional Discourse Analysis: A critical approach for the study of language and society

Abstract

One of the stronger contributions to discourse studies in Latin America is the Interactional Discourse Analysis (IDA) by Bolívar (2005a, 2007a, 2013, 2018). This theoretical-methodological framework integrates the principles of the interpersonal metafunction of the clause (Halliday 1994), the conversation analysis, the planes of discourse (Sinclair 1981) along with a critical Discourse analysis. The combination of these approaches has allowed the evolution of an analytical and critical perspective that encompasses areas as textual patterns, discourse genres, reading and writing in Spanish for academic purposes, (im)politeness, as well as political discourse analysis. This article presents the main theoretical basis of the IDA, its central concepts and some of its areas of application, that reveal some of the methodological parameters provided by this model, which in its critical perspective is recognized as interactional, in contrast to European models that are mainly focused on social representations.
