Abstract

In 1971 the last Oriental white stork which survived in the wild of Toyooka, Japan was placed in captivity. Presently the captive population of the stork has increased to over 100 birds in fourteen zoos and one stork center. A reintroduction plan for the species was initiated in 1992 and a new facility for captive breeding and reintroduction will soon be constructed.
