Abstract
Flumazenil is a specific benzodiazepine antagonist that is useful in reversing the sedation and respiratory depression often associated with benzodiazepine administration or Intentional overdosage. The selective use of this drug may provide useful diagnostic information and may eliminate the need for mechanical ventilation or other invasive supportive measures. Although controversy exists regarding the induction of seizure activity if flumazenil is used in the setting of mixed cyclic antidepressant-benzodiazepine overdose, worldwide experience with flumazenil has conclusively validated its safety and efficacy. © 1993 Aspen Publishers, Inc.
