Abstract

The present work aims to give an account of the tensions and challenges that research in Music Education faces in Chile in order to the 21st century. The current forms of construction of music in expressive and conceptual terms, as well as the abrupt transformations linked to the emergence of new technologies, generate a complex and extensive field of research. These studies must be approached critically and comprehensively with the intention of (re) establishing and (re) formulating the importance of Music Education in the context of current Chilean culture. Through an exploratory documentary study, issues such as the displacement that the musical discipline is suffering at different educational levels are addressed, as well as the serious employability problems that affect the sector. Gender issues are also analyzed and some elements of decolonization in the field of music are exposed. In addition, the complex scenario that has directly affected and stressed Chilean music education due to the social outbreak and the pandemic is analyzed. It is concluded that the research topics should be based on the understanding and development of critical thinking in and from Music Education.
