Abstract
A model is developed that accounts for the finite rate of mass transfer of Mn across the benthic boundary layer and permits assessment of the capability of sea-water to act as a source of metals in Mn nodules. Calculation of diffusion-controlled flux of Mn gave results which demonstrated that Mn is supplied in sufficient quantity to account for all the Mn in nodules. The results agreed well with observed radiometric rates. They indicate that mass transfer of Mn plays a significant role and may even control nodule growth. They also suggest that sea-water may supply other metals, with the possible exception of Co, at rates exceeding their observed accumulation in nodules.-M.S.
