Manchamento Dentário por Tetraciclina: Como Ocorre?

Abstract

Intrinsic tooth darkening caused by tetracycline intake esthetically compromises individuals. These wide-spectrum antibiotics are used for the treatment of infections such as pneumonia, pharyngitis, uncomplicated genitourinary infections, cholera, diarrhea, among others. It is contraindicated during pregnancy, breast feeding and for children below eight years-old because it causes staining of teeth in offspring and in children. The aim of this study is to review the literature on the many aspects related to tooth darkening caused by tetracyclines and to aid dentists on how to better understand the process.
