Abstract
The determination of an analytical method for alternating current (ac) loss prediction is important for the design of electrical apparatus using high-Tc superconducting tapes. Brandt and Indenbom have analytically described the magnetization loss of infinitely thin strips in a perpendicular transverse magnetic field based on the Bean critical state model using their formula. Banno and co-workers have proposed an analytical formula for the magnetization loss of untwisted or twisted-but-coupled BSCCO multifilamentary tapes. The tapes have a relatively small aspect ratio in a transverse magnetic field with an arbitrary field orientation where the power law E-J characteristic and the strong magnetic field dependence of Jc and n value are taken into account. These authors applied these two analytical formulae to measurements of magnetization loss in a transverse external magnetic field in various directions without transport current in a YBCO coated conductor and a BSCCO untwisted multifilamentary tape. The analytical formula of Brandt and Indenbom, which uses a perpendicular transverse magnetic component, agrees well with the magnetization losses in the YBCO coated conductor in a transverse magnetic field with various orientations. The analytical formula of Banno and co-workers roughly agrees with the magnetization loss in the BSCCO untwisted multifilamentary tape above the penetration magnetic field.
