Redefining the High-Output Stoma and Its Bearing on Clinical Practice Results of an International Consensus Panel

Abstract

High-output stomas are a challenge for ostomy care nurses, occurring in 16–50% of small bowel ostomy and causing 20–65% of ostomy-related readmissions. Causes are varied and often multifactorial. Such complexity requires a multidisciplinary approach. Current definitions regarding the high-output ostomy focus on output volume, but this can be arbitrary and may not be reflective of the full clinical scenario. An international clinical expert forum (ICEF) developed 12 consensus statements to redefine the high-output stoma to help improve patient management, support peristomal skin health, and emphasize a more holistic approach. These statements recognize the complexity of patient management, advocating a multidisciplinary approach to management as well as more patient-centric care.
