Abstract

Among the studies that address socio-territorial transformations, those that refer to the concept of gentrification to allude to the process of reappropriation of a territory by the capital, stand out. More precisely, by addressing socio-territorial transformations I refer to the expansion of large cities towards their peripheral areas, and by reappropriation of a territory, I propose to highlight the processes that set-in motion diverse transformations that result in the displacement of the original population. Based on a socio-spatial trans-formation index, this work identifies the different expressions of the gentrification process in two municipalities that are in the capital of the state of Puebla, in the central region of Mexico. From this case, I discuss the specific modalities of gentrification and displacement that accompany the process of urban growth in the Latin American peripheries, highlight-ing the important role played by the State in generating appropriate conditions for the reinvestment of capital in specific areas of the periphery.
