Abstract

A 5k W industrial CO2 laser has been used to investigate the hardening response of Grade 17 type grey iron. A number of different beam intensities was used, and treatment rates were chosen to produce a range of case depths, with and without surface melting. The investigation concentrated on three aspects: case depths achieved, metallurgical structures observed, and wear performance of the hardened tracks. © 1983, The Metals Society.
