Abstract

The increasing energy and power generation demand mainly depends on the consumption of fossil fuels, which contributes to climate change. Protonic electrocatalytic membrane reactors (PECMRs) offer promising potentials for sustainable energy conversion and storage with low energy consumption and low emission due to their high process and energy efficiencies. Many practical applications have been demonstrated based on PECMRs, such as ammonia synthesis, the reduction of CO2, the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons, and other environmental applications. This present chapter summarizes the most recent development of PECMRs sorting by application types, including the introduction of theoretical principles, progress of the material development, and presenting challenges and perspectives.
