The Genoese Consulate of Málaga in the Fifteenth Century. The Record of the 1452 Election

Abstract

Among the Christian mercantile powers of the Mediterranean, Genoa was the main trading partner of the Nasrid Emirate of Granada (1232–1492). We know quite well the dynamics of economic exchanges and the contents of the trade treaties signed since the thirteenth century, but, as paradoxical as it may seem, we know little about the consulates opened in Granada, beyond their existence. The present study addresses for the first time in a comprehensive way the information on the Genoese consulate of Málaga in the fifteenth century, including the identity and interests of the consuls and councilors of the nation or the names of the electors in 1452, whose act of election is edited here for the first time.
