Abstract
In Minas Gerais, the urban space produced the conditions for the development rural. This configuration is the starting point for making an analysis of education. For this, we refer to the city of Mariana, expressions of urbanity that developed in Minas Gerais in the eighteenth century. To demonstrate this condition of the city, we analyzed the action of segments attached to schools and we compared with Sao Goncalo, city with strong rural characteristics. The differences between the cities underlined the role of education in urban areas, primarily through its ability to extend the circulation of subjects traditionally marginalized within the slaveholding and patriarchal societ, notably black people and women.
