Abstract

In Switzerland, more people die from the sequelae of hepatitis C than from those of HIV. Approximately 83 000 people are currently infected with the virus. More than half of them are not tested and have therefore no chance of benefitting from the new, highly potent hepatitis C medicines available. Liver-related extrahepatic morbidity and mortality cloud be lowered significantly if this systemic infection is cured, and the new hepatitis treatment cures over 90 % of patients. The Swiss Hepatitis Strategy aims to eliminate hepatitis C by 2030 and is now planning and implementing appropriate measures on all levels in order to beat this serious epidemic.
