Abstract

Social media development allows users to use it in all fields, purposes, and times. Changes in media usage and exposure greatly influence the process of user interaction. Emotion and communication are the main aspects of this study. Issues such as how users interact with the polite aspects while using media should be interesting to discuss. This study identifies the level of social media use with youth emotions as well as their polite expressions. This study used a quantitative approach through a survey of 395 youths in Penang. The method of data analysis is using descriptive and bivariate. Findings indicate that the aspect of politeness is a consideration in expressing emotions with the emoticons selected by the respondents. For this paper, the findings show that there is a relationship between youth’s positive emotions in using social media and the level of ‘budi bahasa’ shown. The findings of this study suggest that adolescent emotions are an attractive branch to explore for the purpose of exploring online communication research.
