Abstract

Living life to its fullest and finding purpose in life is possible. The ability to adapt positively and rebound after adversity is highly desirable and a positive attribute for wellbeing. Seniors are capable of sustained resilience regardless of socioeconomic background, experience, and health status. There has been increased interest in the role of resilience among seniors who are facing challenges and striving to live life to its fullest. Resilience is a highly desirable positive attribute and necessary for flourishing and thriving in the face of adversities and stressors arising with increased longevity. Maintaining and regaining one’s sense of self involves a combination of personal strengths, protective processes, and social resources. Research indicates that creative and vital involvement helps build and sustain resilience, positively impacting physical and mental health (decreasing depression, falls, improving balance and walk speed), improving neuroplasticity (opening neural pathways in the lateral nodes of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex enabling the formation, control and selection of mental representations), and morale. All are important for health promotion, disease prevention, and a fulfilled life. Creativity allows for continuous self-invention promoting adaptation and allowing individuals to thrive. This presentation will define resilience, review concepts and frameworks of psychological resilience, present propositions and theories regarding the nature of resilience, present the research on the impact of creative engagement, and strategies that can be incorporated into working with older adults. The need for further research and policy changes to increase funding of creative engagement will also be discussed.
