Abstract

The present study presents the environmental valuation of the area affected by the mining company Samarco/Vale/BHP Billiton, due to the rupture of the Fundão and Santarém dams. The method chosen was Costanza, et al (1997), whose objective was to describe and estimate the main ecosystem functions and their natural capital on a planetary scale. The area affected was estimated by EMBRAPA (2016) in 1,430 hectares, where the value perceived by this methodology corresponds to R$ 578,058,795.18/year, which should be understood as the value of the ecosystem loss and natural capital of this territory
