Abstract

The rates and mechanisms of hydration-dehydration reactions of starting materials consisting of mixtures of the reactant and product phases of the four minerals were investigated under P of 0.5-5 kbar and T of 350-700oC, in the presence of pure aqueous fluid. Both reactions involved two dissolution and two precipitation processes, linked by the stoichiometry of the overall reaction. Reaction rates are controlled by reaction at the interface of andalusite with the fluid. Results of the investigation indicate that silicate dissolution and precipitation processes are controlled by reaction at the mineral-fluid interface over a wide P-T range.-M.S.
