Abstract

The European poultry sector is dependent on soybean supplies, mainly from Brazil. This protein-rich raw material is indeed interesting from a nutritional point of view for poultry feed with consequences in terms of price and environmental issues. Protein-rich raw materials produced in France and Europe removes in part imported soybean due to less favorable nutritional balance. Leguminous seeds are also produced in small quantities. European poultry farming are facing major economic, social and environmental issues. Constraints and boosts relating to the poultry feed formulation are analyzed. Different ways of improvement are considered at middle and long-term: precision feeding, adapted raw materials (process, implemented appropriate production chain, new raw materials and additives, varietal selection) and finally adaptable animals. Greater coordination between actors is indispensable to meet these challenges. © 2014 I. Bouvarel et al., published by EDP Sciences.
