Os Baniwa e a escola: sentidos e repercussões

Abstract

Por que um povo indígena se mobiliza e empreende lutas por escola? Quais sentidos e repercussões a educação escolar tem tido para o povo Baniwa, habitante milenar da bacia do rio Içana, afluente da margem direita do rio Negro, no noroeste do estado do Amazonas? Essas perguntas têm motivado a realização de estudos sobre a escola nessa área indígena, em que se mostra esse povo em suas relações com os outros atores sociais existentes na região, vivenciando a implantação da escola. O exame destas relações revela a existência por diferentes projetos educacionais, tecidos por diferentes interesses e visões de mundo e engendrando diferentes sentidos e repercussões para o povo Baniwa.Why do the indian population mobilise itself and struggle to obtain schools? What meanings and repercussions has school education had for the Baniwa people, ancient inhabitants of the Içana river basin located on the right bank of the Negro river, in the Northeast of the State of Amazonas? These questions motivated studies on the role of the school in this indigenous area, on how these people are seen in their relationship with other social actors as they experience the establishment of the school. The examination of such relationships reveals the existence of different educational projects designed with different interests and worldviews, generating different meanings and repercussions for the Baniwa people.
